Garth Watson was Secretary of the Institution of Civil Engineers from 1967 to 1979 and became the Society's President in 1987. His book, The Smeatonians, traces the history of the Society through original documents and letters, together with the minutes of the Society's meetings and provides insight not only into the imaginative and diverse activities of the Smeatonians, but also into the country which they helped to create.
